A woman who was walking her dog Friday night was hit and killed as she crossed the street on Tucson's south side, authorities said.

Alexis Virginia Williams, 61, died at University of Arizona Medical Center after rescuers took her there.

Her dog, which was also struck, died at the scene, said Deputy Jesus Bañuelos of the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

The incident happened at 8:10 p.m. in the 3100 block of East Drexel Road, Bañuelos said.

The driver of an SUV was westbound on Drexel Road when the vehicle struck Williams and her dog at Bonney Avenue, he said.

There is no crosswalk at the intersection, and speed was not a factor, Bañuelos said.

The driver was cooperating with the investigation, he said.
