A woman was found dead in a desert area just south of the Foothills Mall Wednesday.

Shortly before 2 p.m., a passerby reported finding what appeared to be a dead person in the desert in the 2200 block of West Ina Road, said Deputy Tom Peine, a Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

Deputies found the body, which was “in the elements for an extended period of time,” Peine said.

Homicide detectives are investigating what is being called a “suspicious death” at this time, said Peine.

The Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

The woman’s identity is not known, said Peine.

Anyone who recently may have seen suspicious activity in the area is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
