A 92-year-old woman who fled the scene of a car crash was sentenced to probation in Pima County Superior Court on Tuesday.
Persis Draper was accused in February of fleeing an accident with a pedestrian at the intersection of West Magee Road and North La Cholla Boulevard.
Pima County Superior Court Judge Casey McGinley sentenced Draper to 18 months probation and left the offense undesignated, meaning if she successfully completes probation the incident would be designated a misdemeanor.
“I know you didn’t set out to hurt anyone,” McGinley said.
Draper apologized for the accident and said she no longer has a driver’s license.
In police reports of the incident, Draper told Pima County sheriff’s deputies she was rushing and left the scene because she urgently needed to use the toilet.
“The diarrhea started up again after the accident happened. I was going to stop, but then the diarrhea came and I didn’t stop,” Draper told the Star in February.
Draper drove to a nearby grocery store to use the restroom. While there, she bought dinner rolls. After leaving the store she returned to the accident scene but left again when she didn’t see police or the victim.
A witness to the accident followed Draper and took down her license plate number and address and reported it to police. Deputies later cited Draper at her Oro Valley home.
