A woman was found dead in a desert area south of the Foothills Mall on Wednesday.

Shortly before 2 p.m., a passer-by reported finding a dead person in the desert in the 2200 block of West Ina Road, said Deputy Tom Peine, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

The body appeared to have been "in the elements for an extended period of time," he said. Homicide detectives are investigating what is being called for now a "suspicious death," Peine said.

The Pima County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of death. The woman's identity is not known, Peine said.

Anyone who recently may have seen suspicious activity in the area is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
