Six fatalities because of crashes in a dust storm on Interstate 10 in New Mexico closed the interstate to motorists traveling eastbound at the state line, authorities said Thursday.

I-10 was closed between US 191 and the New Mexico state line because of the crashes, which included a tractor-trailer rig fire.

The tractor-trailer fire was about 10 miles east of the Arizona-New Mexico state line, Arizona Department of Transportation officials said shortly before 8 p.m.

According to the Associated Press, the crashes occurred about 5:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the interstate in Hidalgo County, and at least six people were confirmed dead.
