Over the first 22 days of August, the Arizona Daily Star and KVOA (Channel 4) are showcasing 22 of the best high school football players in Southern Arizona. This preseason All-Southern Arizona football team features daily profiles in print and a video clip shown on KVOA at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. A different player, selected by Star and KVOA staffers, will be featured each day through Aug. 22, when the Star's high school football preview is published.

Above all, an athlete. For as good as he is at football, Rolly Escarcega is among a select few also impressive at basketball. As a bruising center and power forward last season, the 245-pounder helped the Falcons win 11 straight games after winter break and make the state semifinals.

If you ask CDO coach Dusty Peace, Blake Martinez is the second best player in Tucson behind star running back Ka'Deem Carey. And now, the two get to share a sideline. After a playoff stint with Santa Rita in 2009, Martinez transferred to CDO in December and spent last semester settling in.

The question is not so much about who Johnny Peña is, but whether he can continue to be who he was in his debut. As a freshman last season, a rare opportunity dropped in Peña's lap: Salpointe senior running back Bobby Way went down with a season-ending ankle injury in the preseason, and thus began the Lancers' search for a dominant rusher.
