Clarinetist Il Hun Jang and pianist Kyungsun Choi return to Academy Village, 13715 E. Langtry Lane, Tuesday for an 11:30 a.m. concert that is free and open to the public.
The concert, sponsored by the Arizona Senior Academy, features "Grand Duo Concertante" by Carl Maria von Weber and "Sonata No. 1" by Johannes Brahms.
Weber was perhaps the world's most prolific composer for the clarinet. "Grand Duo" is unique because, unlike his other clarinet works, it presents an equal juxtaposition of two virtuoso solo parts. American clarinetist Jonathan Cohler wrote, "The piece closes with what could best be described as a virtuosic orgy of scales and arpeggios for two."
In "Sonata No. 1," Brahms also did not reduce the scope of his piano part to spotlight the clarinet, but created a more equal and harmonious relationship between soloist and accompanist. This piece was one of the last chamber pieces written by Brahms before his death.
Academy Village is an active-adult community off Old Spanish Trail, six miles southeast of Saguaro National Park East.
After the performance, concertgoers are invited to have lunch at the Academy Cafe, which is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Prices range from 4.50 to $9.50.
About the musicians
This duo has appeared often at Academy Village, both with each other and with other chamber musicians.
Jang graduated from Kosin University in South Korea and performed in his home country in several youth orchestras, clarinet ensembles and wind ensembles before moving to the United States to continue his studies.
He was a first-prize winner at the Chamber Music competition held by the Korean Clarinet Festival in 2003. Jang obtained his master's degree from Campbellsville University (Kentucky), then an artist diploma from Duquesne University. He is pursuing a doctoral degree at the University of Arizona.
Choi is ubiquitous in the Tucson music scene, appearing as a soloist, chamber musician, accompanist and teacher. He graduated with a BA in piano performance from Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. He is a graduate teaching assistant at the UA as he pursues his DMA in piano performance under Paula Fan.
