The Vail Theatre of the Arts presents a bluegrass/folk concert featuring Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum with Nathan McEuen and Mark Robertson-Tessi at Tucson's Vail Theatre of the Arts at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Lewis and Rozum, 1996 Grammy nominees for Best Traditional Folk Album, play everything from straight-up bluegrass to traditional country to selections from more contemporary genres. Lewis has established herself as one of the finest, most diversely talented folk artists in traditional American and bluegrass music today. She is a gifted fiddler, deft guitarist, inspired songwriter and powerfully evocative singer. She was named the FAR-West Best of the West performer in 2011, joining the ranks of The Kingston Trio and John McEuen.
Rozum is a former Tucsonan who played with the popular band Summerdog Bluegrass and Mariachi Experience during the 1970s. His versatility and background as a rock and swing musician add a uniquely satisfying flavor to Lewis' fiddle-playing and vocals. He plays primarily mandolin with Lewis, but is also an accomplished fiddle, mandola and guitar player.
McEuen, son of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's John McEuen, was exposed to musicians such as Johnny Cash, Kenny Loggins, Leon Russell, Willie Nelson, The Dillards, Steve Martin, John Denver and many others at a very young age.He learned as much as he could from each of them but blazed his own trail, which spans the indie-rock, folk and bluegrass genres. He has been performing for 18 years, done thousands of live performances, written more than 60 songs and sold over 50,000 CDs.
McEuen will be accompanied by former Tucsonan Mark Robertson-Tessi, a virtuosic multi-instrumentalist whose specialty is mandolin. He was a longtime member of The String Figures and Round The House until his career took him to Florida a few years ago. Robertson-Tessi and McEuen have combined their talents to perform some shows on the East Coast. Now the two are meeting up again for Saturday's show at the Vail Theatre of the Arts.
