Is it possible to get too much vitamin D from the sun? Do some people get too little vitamin D, or do they get it in the wrong form? What are good food sources of vitamin D? Are some people more at risk for vitamin D deficiency?

These and other questions about this essential vitamin will be answered in the monthly wellness lecture at Academy Village Wednesday, presented by a registered dietitian who is a faculty member in the University of Arizona Department of Nutritional Sciences.

Kelly Jackson, assistant director of the UA Didactic Program in Dietetics, will speak on "Vitamin D: An Update on the Sunshine Vitamin." The lecture, describing what's new in the area of vitamin D research, begins at 3:30 p.m. in the great room of the Arizona Senior Academy Building.

The academy's weekly lectures and concerts are free and open to the public.

For the past eight years Jackson has been a lecturer and academic adviser at the UA, where she teaches courses in areas such as human nutrition in health and disease, nutrition careers, and nutrition education and counseling. Her main focus is educating and mentoring the next generation of registered dietitians.

Before working in higher education, Jackson was a clinical dietitian in Portland, Ore., and Las Vegas, specializing in cardiology and critical care. She received a bachelor of science degree in nutrition and food management (dietetics) from Oregon State University and a master's degree in nutritional sciences from the UA.

Academy Village is an active-adult community located off Old Spanish Trail. Due to the popularity of Arizona Senior Academy events, non-members are encouraged to make advance reservations.
