For several years the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson has sponsored sales of pottery from the village of Mata Ortiz.

The sales have helped the village survive hard times brought about by drug-related violence in Mexico.

If you’ve never heard about the miracle of Mata Ortiz, you have missed a heart-warming success story of how a small village in Chihuahua, Mexico, was able to reinvent itself through making and selling pottery.

Pottery from Mata Ortiz, entirely handmade, is highly prized around the world and pieces are displayed in several museums in the United States. Some of the handmade vessels sell for thousands of dollars and are as delicate and elegant as the most luxurious porcelain ware.

The church, at 4831 E. 22nd St., is hosting a sale of Mata Ortiz pottery from 11:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Prices begin at $10, and there will be a wide range of pots from which to choose. There also will be pottery-making and decorating demonstrations by native potter Ana Trillo, and food will be available for purchase.

Cash and checks will be accepted, but no credit cards.
