Tucson-based appeals Judge Peter J. Eckerstrom has been selected chief judge of Division 2 of the Arizona Court of Appeals

Eckerstrom has served on the Arizona Court of Appeals since 2003.

He succeeds Judge Joseph W. Howard, who in July completed a five-year term as the court’s administrative head.

Eckerstrom graduated from Tucson High School. He later attended Yale University and Stanford Law School.

Before he was appointed to the appeals court, he was a public defender.

Division 2 of the Arizona Court of Appeals reviews legal challenges to trial court judgments from Superior Court in Pima, Pinal, Cochise, Gila, Santa Cruz, Graham and Greenlee counties.

Judge Garye L. Vásquez of Casa Grande, has been selected vice chief judge.
