School employees aim to boost health

More than 120 public-school employees in Pima County have signed up to serve as wellness coordinators.

Wellness coordinators receive specialized training on how to improve the health of students in their schools by learning about opportunities to increase physical activity and promote nutritious eating, according to a news release from the Pima County Health Department.

The initiative is part of Communities Putting Prevention to Work - a national effort by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The goal is to prevent or reduce the spread of obesity and related diseases.

It's funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

As part of the program, wellness coordinators establish school health advisory councils made up of school administrators, teachers, students, community representatives and parents, along with staffers from the food service, before-school and after-school programs.

The advisory council will complete a school health index to identify strengths and weaknesses in regard to physical activity and nutrition in each school, then develop an action plan.

If San Cayetano is awarded the prize money, it will go toward student netbook laptops, computer storage carts, projectors, laser printers and ink, maintenance, workshops and training.

Voting runs through Jan. 31 at www.refresheverything.com
