Nine Tucson-area high school graduates have been awarded a combined $12,000 in scholarships from Pima Federal Credit Union.

Traditionally, the credit union awards two $2,500 scholarships, which went to Clarissa Moreno of Desert View High School and Phoebe Meixner of City High School, but this year an additional seven students were recognized.

The students, who were awarded $1,000 scholarships, are Ashley Rodriguez and Siobhan Frankiewicz of Mountain View, Austin Nichter of Arizona College Prep Academy, Carley Kaiser of Flowing Wells High School, Michael Albertson of Desert Christian High School, and homeschool students Daniel Dicken and Timothy DesJarlais.

Applicants were required to submit two letters of recommendation from community leaders or educators, an autobiographical statement and a one-page essay.
