Marana High student gets $72K scholarship
A Marana High School senior has won a $72,000 National Merit Hispanic Scholarship from the University of Arizona.
Kimberly York, a National Hispanic Scholar, will also receive a $1,500 stipend to study abroad. The senior has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school.
National Hispanic Scholar is a program of the College Board that recognizes Hispanic students with an excellent academic record.
York, who has attended Marana schools since fourth grade, is also a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, a math honor society.
Tanque Verde arts teacher is honored
A Tanque Verde Unified School District teacher has received top honors from the Arizona Art Education Association.
Emily Dobson, who teaches at Tanque Verde High School, was selected for the 2016 Outstanding National Art Honor Society Award. She is an active member of the association and established a local chapter of the National Art Honor Society.
A retired Tanque Verde teacher also received an award. Charlene Atkinson, a former elementary art teacher, received the 2016 Outstanding Retired Art Educator Award from the association. Atkinson now volunteers with the district’s art program.
Rincon foundation’s Hall of Fame breakfast
The Rincon High School Foundation is hosting its annual Hall of Fame breakfast Nov. 5.
The event will be at the Tucson Country Club, 2950 N. Camino Principal, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Three people will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. They are: Bill Mehle, a retired PE teacher and basketball coach; Mareena Boosamra-Ball, the choir director; and Bill Broyles, an alumnus and former teacher.
