Financial Aid Night is Tuesday at Catalina High

Catalina Magnet High School will host its sixth annual College Financial Aid Night on Tuesday.

Financial aid experts from the University of Arizona, Pima Community College, Hughes Federal Credit Union and others will be on hand to speak about how to afford sending students to college.

The free event is from 6 to 8 p.m. in the cafeteria, 3645 E. Pima St. It is open to students from all grade levels, all schools, family, friends and community members.

Teen’s research winnings to benefit wildlife efforts

A 16-year-old Tucson High Magnet School student’s winnings from her research on the presence of ocelots in Southern Arizona will benefit wildlife biologists at the Sky Island Alliance.

Meagan Bethel is presenting the first of two $500 checks that she was awarded from the Pollination Project today at 5 p.m.

The Pollination Project funds and helps translate ideas into action that benefits people, environmental sustainability, social justice, community health and wellness, arts and media.

Bethel earned the award last year for her previous work investigating the presence of ocelots in Southern Arizona, part of her long-term science research using remote-sensing cameras in a nearby mountain range for the Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the school, 1350 N. Arcadia Ave. It is open to the public, and there is no charge for admission.

Activities include games, horse-drawn carriage rides, train rides, straw star making, gnome making, seasonal decorations and other make-and-take items. Vendors will offer handmade arts and crafts, decorations, and jewelry. Traditional German and other cuisine will also be available.

All proceeds from the market are used by the Parent Council to support teachers’ continuing education and professional development.
