The only public charter school in the town of Oracle — north of Tucson in Pinal County — is closing.

The Arizona State Board for Charter Schools approved an agreement this month for Sierra Oaks School, 650 W. Linda Vista Road, to voluntarily end its charter contract.

For two years the Arizona Department of Education gave the school a "D" grade for academic performance. If the school’s performance hadn’t improved, the board may have taken action to revoke the charter agreement in the Fall, said charter board executive director DeAnna Rowe.

The school opened in 2002 and had fewer than 40 students in grades K-6.
