Canyon del Oro High School placed fifth in the national Academic Decathlon in Texas over the weekend.

The competition was held Wednesday through Saturday in San Antonio and was organized by the United States Academic Decathlon.

The first four places went to William Howard Taft High School, in Woodland Hills, Calif.; Plano Senior High School, in Plano, Texas; Waukesha West High School in Waukesha, Wis.; and Whitney Young High School, in Chicago.

CDO won the Arizona Academic Decathlon last month, clearing the road for the national competition.

The team faced questions on topics such as art, music, science, economics and math, with this school year's overlying theme, the European Renaissance.
