Mariachi program earns $20,000 grant

The mariachi program at Billy Lane Lauffer Middle School has been awarded a $20,000 grant.

The program, dubbed Mariachi Cascabel, received the three-year grant from the McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation.

The grant will be used to continue developing the mariachi program, which for the past six years has been led by Lauffer teacher Daniel Dong.

The program serves more than 30 students.

Celebrity spelling bee to benefit TUSD

Local public officials will put their spelling skills to the test Friday to raise money for the Educational Enrichment Foundation.

The Sakin Foundation will host the second annual Celebrity Spelling Bee at 7:30 p.m at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave.

Contestants will include Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild, Pima County Supervisor Sharon Bronson, Pima County Schools Superintendent Linda Arzoumanian, Arizona Daily Star editorial cartoonist David Fitzsimmons and former University of Arizona basketball player Joseph Blair.

Contestants will study word lists in advance of the show and will be allowed one lifeline to help them spell a word during the event.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance or at the door. For more information, call Larry Sakin at 576-3453.

The Educational Enrichment Foundation supports Tucson Unified School District students and teachers.

Eastpointe to host open house Thursday

Eastpointe High School is holding an open house Thursday.

Prospective students and families can meet staff and get enrollment information.

The event is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at 8495 E. Broadway. For more information, call 731-8180.

St. Gregory has new head of school

Julie A. Sherrill has been named the new head of school at St. Gregory College Preparatory School.

Sherrill is replacing Rick Belding who retired from the independent school in June.

Sherrill previously served as principal at Sunrise Drive Elementary School in the Catalina Foothills School District for 10 years.

"It is exciting to be part of such a vibrant school community," Sherrill said.
