Students to compete in Shakespeare contest

Nearly three dozen high school students will compete Saturday in the 28th annual Shakespeare contest.

The Southern Arizona students will perform at Marroney Theatre on the University of Arizona campus, 1025 N. Olive Road, at 10 a.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

Each contestant will deliver a 20-line monologue from Shakespeare's plays.

The performers are competing for an all-expense-paid trip to New York in April for the national Shakespeare competition.

St. Gregory teen gets nat'l volunteer award

A St. Gregory College Preparatory School senior has received a national President's Volunteer Service Award.

Olivia Larsen was recognized for her work with children with special needs at Therapeutic Riding of Tucson.

Larsen, 18, has volunteered more than 200 hours since her freshman year. The Service Award recognizes those serving their community.

It is presented by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Obama.

Digital learning focus of open house

The Vail School District is holding an open house for middle school students and parents interested in the Blended Learning digital program.

Vail Blended Learning combines online instruction and face-to-face small-group instruction to provide a challenging and individualized education.

The open house for incoming sixth-graders will be Tuesday.

The meeting for incoming seventh- and eighth-graders is Wednesday.

Both events start at 6 p.m. at the Vail Blended Learning site, 7545 S. Houghton Road, Suites 101 and 102.

The meetings are open to students from across the Vail and Tucson areas.
