Flowing Wells senior gets top Scouts award

A Flowing Wells High School senior was recognized by U.S. Rep. Ron Barber for her achievement in the Girl Scouts.

Courtney Shelton was one of only 17 Girl Scouts nationwide to receive the Gold Award for her self-esteem community project.

The award challenges high school girls to devise a seven-step project to solve a community problem.

Vail tech director wins national honor

The director of technology for the Vail School District has been named one of "20 to Watch" by the National School Boards Association.

Andy Chlup is being recognized for promoting the incorporation of innovative technology into high-quality classroom learning and school district operations.

The association is also honoring 19 others from across the country.

The "20 to Watch" program identifies emerging leaders within the educational technology community who have the potential to foster changes in the field for the next 20 years.

Chlup is one of the primary technology architects of Beyond Textbooks, which is being used by 69 districts to share lessons, tools and assessments along with standard calendars.

His most recent venture was the revamping of the district's online programs, including the Vail Blended Learning Center and Vail's home-school partnership.
