Ballots for the Sunnyside Unified School District Governing Board recall election will be mailed to voters in the district Thursday.

Two incumbents are defending their seats against three challengers in the May 20 mail-in election. Ballots can be filled out at any time and mailed back to the Pima County Recorder’s Office or dropped off on Election Day at three sites. (See box for more information.)

Beki Quintero, a south-side community organizer who helped lead the recall effort, and Tucson businessman Mike Polak are running for board member Bobby Garcia’s seat.

Eric Giffin, who served on the Sunnyside board for 12 years, is trying to unseat board clerk Louie Gonzales.

The election was ordered in January after a petition to recall Gonzales and Garcia was filed after they, along with current board President Eva Carrillo Dong, voted last summer to extend Superintendent Manuel Isquierdo’s contract for an additional two years.

The extension came after Isquierdo withdrew as the sole finalist for a superintendent position at a district in San Antonio after media reports there of his personal financial troubles.

Many district residents and parents disagreed with the contract extension, citing concerns over Isquierdo’s leadership and his personal and legal troubles, including unpaid taxes, filing for bankruptcy and a driver’s license suspension.
