The Sunnyside Unified School District Governing Board voted Thursday to give district employees a 2 percent raise next school year.

The raise applies to employees hired before Dec. 31, 2013.

The board approved the salary increase unanimously.

The recommendation was initially brought to the board at an April meeting but was tabled after teachers expressed concern that negotiations between the employee organizations and district had not already been done.

The Interest-Based Bargaining group, which represents all the employee organizations, agreed with the 2 percent raise on Tuesday, Debra Bergman, assistant superintendent of human resources and organizational development, told the board.

A memo from the district’s cabinet to the IBB group said the salary increase item was inadvertently scheduled for board action in April without obtaining consensus from the group.

Contracts are expected to be issued Friday.

The board also voted Thursday to approve the sale of $18 million in bonds, which includes $8 million that would be used to remodel Chaparral Middle School to become a K-8 fine arts magnet school; $5.8 million for technology, furniture, fixes and equipment; and $4.2 million for remodeling and renovating throughout the district.

Board member Buck Crouch was the lone dissenter on the issue. He expressed concern that some documents presented to the board were missing information.
