The Sunnyside school board has called an unexpected meeting for Tuesday to discuss whether to renew Superintendent Manuel Isquierdo’s contract.

Last week, the board agreed by a 4-1 vote that Isquierdo met 93 percent of his performance goals and would receive that percentage of his $7,500 performance pay. The board did not discuss his contract.

Isquierdo’s contract expires in June 2014 and he is seeking a three-year extension.

Isquierdo’s misuse of a district credit card and financial troubles that caused him to file for bankruptcy are among some issues for which the superintendent has faced criticism since taking over the district in 2007.

Tuesday’s meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Sunnyside administration building, 2238 E. Ginter Road.

The board will immediately go into executive session to discuss the contract and will move into a public session for a possible vote, said board member Buck Crouch.
