1830: Anson P.K. Safford, third territorial governor and founder of Arizona's public school system, is born.

1862: Confederate President Jefferson Davis proclaims Arizona a Confederate Territory.

1912: President William Howard Taft signs the Statehood Bill making Arizona the 48th state of the United States. Tucson’s population is 13,125.
