Authenticity of Jesus' teachings focus of talk

"Which Teachings of Jesus?" will be the focus for the "Reading the Christian Scriptures Again - for the First Time" series in the adult education program at St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church Sunday. The study will be led by Jerry Gill.

Modern scholarship, especially the work of the "Jesus Seminar," has raised serious questions about the authenticity of the teachings of Jesus as they are presented in the Gospel stories, according to Gill.

The criteria to be used in determining which teachings are authentic need to be determined, and this issue will be taken up in Sunday's discussion.

The classes are at 11 a.m. in the church center, and everyone is welcome. St. Francis is at 4625 E. River Road, at North Swan Road. For more information, call the church office at 299-9063.

Peace group to share findings from Mideast trip

In December 2012, St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church member Art Aldag and nine of his colleagues from the International Center for Peace and Justice took a trip to Israel and Palestinian lands.

The group included four Muslims, four Jews and two Christians. Although they visited many sites considered to be of great significance in each tradition, their main focus was to meet with people in the region who are actively engaged in promoting peaceful resolutions to conflict in the Middle East.

Beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday, members of this group will share photos and the impressions of their trip. They visited a Bedouin village, spent a night sharing stories and sleeping in the home of a Palestinian family, and had several opportunities to interact with residents of the settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as well as leaders in organizations such as Rabbis for Human Rights, Lights of Peace Society, Jerusalem Peacemakers and the House of Peace.

Everyone is invited to the presentation, which is free.

St. Francis in the Foothills is at 4625 E. River Road, at North Swan Road. For more information, call the church office at 299-9063.
