This Saturday three young world-class musicians known as Salty Suites will perform in the continuation of the Live Acoustic Music Association's "all-star" series at Abounding Grace Sanctuary.
The Salty Suites are Scott Gates, Chuck Hailes and Chelsea Williams. These energetic and fun musicians from Southern California share a passion for roots music and bluegrass, as well as traditional mountain music.
Gates gained national recognition as a finalist on "America's Most Talented Kids" when he was just 12. Now, eight years later, he has been a mainstay at festivals and has performed all over the country with artists as varied as John McEuen, Steve Martin, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Kenny Loggins and a virtual who's who of bluegrass players.
Gates appeared on the "Ellen" Show with Steve Martin, recorded a children's album with Kenny Loggins, appeared in an episode of the 2011 season of "Justified" and toured the U.S. extensively with Nathan McEuen.
Hailes is one of the country's top bass players. He was schooled in classical and jazz bass playing and techniques. Hailes also toured with the Nathan McEuen Band. He writes his own music and has teamed up with Gates to create many new musical gems. With his background in bluegrass music and a degree in the upright bass, Hailes sings and plays in a way that is uniquely his own.
Williams has been writing and performing her own music since she was 13. After a couple of years in two different working bands, she took the stage on her own at the age of 17, performing at clubs and coffee shops. While some of her early songs are still hits with her fans, she has continued to develop as a writer, penning more than 100 original songs to date.
Williams has been making her living by playing on the street for tips and selling more than 100,000 CDs, one by one, on her own on the street. In 2012, she was featured in a Chevy commercial that portrayed a young musician reaching for the stars and striving to make it big.
Williams and the other Salty Suites have been performing together for three years, and have been producing new tunes at an amazing rate.
They have released their first CD, the self-titled "Salty Suites," recorded a live CD that will be released soon and have been busy in the studio working on their second studio CD with producer/engineer Jeff Peters (Brian Setzer, The Beach Boys, Flogging Molly and Joan Jett). They also recently opened for Dwight Yoakam in California.
