The second in St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church's Adult Education series on "Reading the Hebrew Scriptures Again - For the First Time" will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The focus will be on the struggles and triumphs within the "First Family" of the Hebrew nation, namely among Abraham and Isaac, Jacob and Esau, and Joseph and his brothers.

The dynamics of these family relationships are recounted in the Book of Genesis, chapters 12 through 50, and they constitute an extremely interesting and inspiring story about how the Hebrews came to understand their origins as a race and as a "chosen" people. This understanding was not arrived at easily and smoothly.

Sunday's class will begin with a consideration of the struggle involved in Abraham's effort to sacrifice Isaac, his only son, because he thought God was asking him to do so. Then attention will turn to the struggle Jacob and his brother Esau had over their inheritance rights. Finally the dynamics between Joseph and his brothers, who sold him down the river to Egypt, will be taken up.

The classes are free and open to the public.

The third session, on Dec. 16, will cover the three kings of Israel. The final session, on Dec. 23, will take up the prophets during the period of the captivities and exile.

St. Francis in the Foothills is at 4625 E. River Road, at North Swan Road. For more information, call the church office at 299-9063.
