Anti-illegal-immigration activist Tom Tancredo has signed up as co-chair of a new political committee to oppose the recall of state Sen. Russell Pearce.
Tancredo is a former U.S. representative from Colorado who ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. He serves as co-chair of the Team America Political Action Committee, based in Virginia, which exists to keep illegal immigration and border security at the top of the country's priorities.
The Team America PAC is listed on a state filing as sponsor of the new anti-recall committee. The other co-chair of Team America, Angela M. "Bay" Buchanan, is listed as co-chair and treasurer of the new committee.
Arizona Senate President Pearce, who built his reputation on anti-illegal-immigration laws such as SB 1070, is to face a recall election on Nov. 8.
In the meantime, supporters are challenging the petition signatures that were submitted to force the recall and approved by state and county officials.
Recall leader Randy Parraz criticized Pearce for taking support from outside Arizona.
"This man has more support out of state than in-state," Parraz said.
Tancredo did not return an email or call seeking comment.
Tancredo and Buchanan ventured into the recall race earlier when they solicited donations from corporations, prompting a decision by the state elections director that corporations could not donate to the pro- and anti-recall campaigns.
Matt Tolman, chairman of the in-state group Citizens Who Oppose the Pearce Recall, said Tancredo's committee has nothing to do with his group.
