The folks who keep the wheels turning on city vehicles are being recognized as being among the best in the nation.

Government Fleet Magazine recognized Tucson with a 100 Best Fleets Award for 2013.

The award program rewards peak performing public-sector fleet operations in North America.

Tucson's fleet was acknowledged for its operational efficiency, significant savings and increased fleet availability.

"The City of Tucson Fleet Services is a top performing fleet because we are focused on continuous improvement," Gary Lowe, Fleet Services administrator, said in a news release.

Lowe credited his 74 shop personnel, seven supervisors and six lead mechanic/technicians for the recognition.

"We staff our division with experienced professionals and provide opportunities for all staff to be involved in making Fleet Services one of the best municipal fleets in the country," Lowe said.

The award program was created in part to identify top performing fleet divisions for others to emulate, and to engender pride in the industry.

Next month, the top 20 and the No. 1 fleets will be announced at the Government Fleet Expo and Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

The fleet-services division maintains about 2,400 vehicles and other equipment owned by the city.
