The South Tucson City Council appointed Miguel Rojas to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Jennifer Eckstrom.
Rojas, a former councilman, will fill Eckstrom's council seat for the remainder of the term, which ends in June 2015.
Eckstrom, an executive assistant for Pima County Supervisor Ramón Valadez, resigned April 10.
Eckstrom was the city's mayor, but the council decided to leave the appointment of a new mayor until after the seating of three new council members in June, said Councilwoman Anita Romero.
The incoming council members, who each garnered more than 50 percent of the vote in the March 12 primary, are Ildefonso Green, Vanessa Mendoza and Oscar Patino.
In another matter, council members received a letter of retirement from South Tucson City Manager Enrique Serna last week.
Serna, who is a former Pima County manager, said he will effectively retire on May 26.
