Tucson shooting spree survivors push background checks for all gun buyers

Survivors of the Tucson shooting spree and members of anti-gun violence organizations gathered Tuesday morning in front of Sen. Jeff Flake’s office to encourage him to support proposed legislation that would make criminal background checks mandatory for all gun sales.

Flake is part of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee which is set to consider moving forward with proposed universal background check legislation at an executive business meeting Thursday. The Protecting Responsible Gun Sellers Act of 2013, calls for listing people who should not be allowed to buy a gun in the national instant criminal background check system and would require that a background check be conducted for every gun sale.

Jan. 8 shooting survivors Bill Badger and Pam Simon spoke at today’s event and recounted their experiences from the day when Jared Lee Loughner opened fire at an event hosted by former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Six people were killed and Giffords was among 13 people who were wounded.

“This is an issue that is very, very personal to me, we’re here today because we want to call on Senator Flake to vote yes on Thursday to fix our broken background check system,” Simon said.

The organizations hand delivered more than 300 letters to Flake’s office, 6840 N. Oracle Road, from constituents urging Flake to support the legislation.
