Longtime Tucson media and sports personality Dave Sitton announced today he's forming a committee to explore a run for Congress.

Sitton, known as the "voice of the Wildcats" for his broadcasts of Arizona basketball, is looking into running in the new 2nd congressional district. As the redistricting maps stand, that would be the same seat held by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Sitton is the second well-known Republican from the Tucson area to explore a run for Congress. State Sen. Frank Antenori also has formed a committee to look into a run.

Giffords is still recovering from a gunshot wound suffered Jan. 8 and hasn't announced whether she plans to run for re-election. The new congressional districts are also in formation and depend on the outcome of a struggle over the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission.

Sitton's spokeswoman, Linda Fahey, said he doesn't plan to do interviews today. In a written statement, he said, "In a political and economic environment characterized by low morale and despair, I am committed to promoting economic growth, hope, and opportunity in both Southern Arizona and the country."
