A memorial Mass honoring the Rev. Andrew Greeley, a well-known liberal Catholic priest, sociologist and best-selling author who lived part time in Tucson, is set for Thursday.

Bishop Gerald Kicanas of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson will officiate at the Mass, which starts at 7 p.m. at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Parish, 1800 S. Kolb Road.

A plaque honoring Greeley will be unveiled in the church's vestibule after the Mass.

Greeley died May 29 in his sleep at his apartment in Chicago. He was 85.

Greeley wrote 50 best-selling novels with religious themes and racy scenes and more than 100 nonfiction works that were sometimes critical of the Catholic Church.

He earned millions of dollars from his novels, most of which he donated to the church and various charities.

He also taught sociology courses at the University of Arizona.

Greeley's funeral was held last week in Chicago.
