New VETS Center opens near university

The Veterans Education and Transition Services Center at the University of Arizona has opened a new location in the Arizona Health Sciences Library, which is located at 1501 N. Campbell Ave.

The new VETS Center, which opened last week, offers resources for students pursuing careers in health-care fields.

Over the past 13 years, UA student-veteran enrollment has risen 83 percent.

Student-veteran leaders helped to guide and build the UA VETS Center after finding themselves transitioning from combat and other war-related deployments to the classroom.

The center is a joint venture of the UA Veterans Education and Transition Services Center on the main campus and representatives from Arizona Health Sciences Center.

Bisbee hospital opens new ER department

Bisbee’s Copper Queen Community Hospital opened its new emergency department and renovation project on Friday.

Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Capt. Mark Kelly, attended a gathering.

Giffords was recognized for her efforts to secure federal investments for the expansion project while she was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The emergency department is now double in size and includes nine exam rooms, two critical care rooms, four fast-track rooms, telemedicine capability in all treatment rooms, new CT scanning equipment, and a dedicated emergency room entrance, lobby and waiting area.

The project’s contractor was Diversified Design & Construction Inc., and the DLR Group provided architect services.

The Copper Queen Community Hospital has a long history dating back to the 1880s.

Oro Valley Hospital now pediatric-ready

Oro Valley Hospital recently became a pediatric prepared emergency care certified hospital, as recognized by the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

That means Oro Valley Hospital’s emergency room meets specific criteria, including personnel training and equipment and facilities to provide emergency care for pediatric patients.

The hospital staff can stabilize a child for transfer to a facility that offers more specialized pediatric care, if necessary.

To receive the certification, the hospital met specific criteria for personnel training, along with having equipment and facilities that support optimal care for ill or injured infants, children and teens.
