Since we announced our new full-access subscription model last Sunday, thousands of readers have activated their accounts. Thank you. We hope you are enjoying all of our content in print and digital, including, the e-Newspaper, and the Star’s smartphone and tablet apps.

If you haven’t already taken advantage of the benefits of your full-access subscription, please do today. The following questions and answers should ease the way.

• What does it mean to “activate”?

If the printed newspaper is delivered to your home, that will continue unchanged. Your subscription also includes all of our digital content — the website, e-Newspaper, and smartphone and tablet apps. But to have full access to this digital content, you need to activate your subscription. By activating, you are entered to win one of nine iPads.

• So how do I activate?

You have several options, but let’s start with the one that is easiest for most people.

Go to and click on the big blue “activate your full access” button on the right. The form that pops up will ask for two pieces of information: the ZIP code where your printed paper is delivered and the telephone number you provided when you subscribed to the Star.

One thing we have learned in the past week is that some customers cannot remember that telephone number. That’s understandable; many of us move and change numbers. If you do not know the number linked to your account, email or call customer service at 1-800-695-4492 for assistance.

• I already have your smartphone app. Can I activate on my phone?

Absolutely. When you click on a story in a section that shows an image of a padlock, a box will pop up on the screen. It will give you the option to log in or to activate. Select activate. Activation is a one-time action that will give you access on not only your phone but also on your computer or tablet.

• I already have your tablet app. Can I activate on my tablet?

Not at this time, but we are working to make that available soon.

• I am a subscriber to the e-edition, so I already have a login and password. Do those still work or do I have to do something else to activate my account?

The e-edition, which is now called the e-Newspaper, has been folded into your full-access account. That means you now have access to the e-Newspaper and to all of our other digital content — the website and smartphone and tablet apps.

Your old login and password no longer work. Instead we ask that you activate your full-access account using the big blue button on the right side of Once you’ve done that, your new single login and password give you full access to Star content in all digital forms — for instance, on your home computer and smartphone.

We are troubleshooting a problem on the e-Newspaper apps. In the meantime, once you have activated your full-access subscription, look for the words “e-Newspaper” in the upper right corner of and click on it (see image above).
