A state Department of Corrections inmate who was assigned to work at the county animal care center apparently committed suicide Wednesday, police said.

A 47-year-old inmate from a state prison was found hanging, said Sgt. Maria Hawke, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.

Hawke said police were dispatched to assist Tucson Fire Department paramedics.

Firefighters were dispatched at 2:49 p.m. after a 911 call from personnel at Pima Animal Care Center, 4000 N. Silverbell Road, reported a man was found hanging, said Capt. Barrett Baker, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.

Departmen of Corrections investigators have taken over the scene, Hawke said.

The center was closed, but is expected to reopen Thursday. Persons should call 243-5900.
