Desert Winds Elementary and Picture Rocks Intermediate schools on Tucson’s northwest side were locked down just after 10 this morning when a school official saw a man with a handgun on campus.

When the man was spotted on campus, he jumped a fence and ran toward the Picture Rocks Community Center on North Sanders Road, Deputy Tom Peine, spokesman for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, said.

Witnesses described the man as in his 20s, standing about 6 feet tall and wearing a light green shirt or jacket.

Pima County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the school within three minutes and continue to search the area with the assistance of Department of Public Safety ground and air units, rangers from Saguaro National Park, and the Bureau of Land Management, Peine said.

The school lockdown was lifted just before noon.

Anyone with information about the man should call 911 or 88-CRIME.
