A motorcyclist lost control and went off the road at Gates Pass Thursday sustaining critical injuries, authorities said.

The man, who is about 35 years old, was treated by paramedics of the Northwest Fire District and taken by ambulance to University of Arizona Medical Center, said Capt. Adam Goldberg, fire district spokesman.

Paramedics responded to the 6200 block of West Gates Pass Road at 5:38 p.m. and found the motorcyclist about 8 feet off the road down an embankment, said Goldberg.

He was wearing a helmet, but he suffered significant trauma from the crash, Goldberg said.

Pima County Sheriff's Department traffic investigators were at the scene, and the road in both directions is expected to remain closed for the next several hours, said Goldberg.
