Col. Howard “Philip” Purcell will assume command of the 162nd Fighter Wing of the Arizona Air National Guard on Saturday.

The ceremony at the Tucson International Airport Air Guard Station will be presided over by Brig. Gen. Edward “Slap” Maxwell, said a news release from the fighter wing.

Purcell is replacing Brig. Gen. Michael “Mick” McGuire, who departed from the wing Sept. 7 to assume duties as adjutant general for the Arizona National Guard.

Purcell will become the fighter wing’s 12th commanding officer since it was formed in 1956. He most recently served as the vice wing commander of the 192nd Fighter Wing, Virginia Air National Guard, the release said.

He is a veteran of Operations Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, with 26 years of service and more than 3,000 flying hours in the F-16 and F-22 Raptor.
