Gospel of John, Jesus focus of discussion

This Sunday the adult education program at St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church will present a discussion of the unique way Jesus is presented in the New Testament’s Gospel of John.

The presentation is part of the ongoing Fall Advent Series at St. Francis and will be led by Jerry Gill, a professor of philosophy and religion at Pima Community College. Gill will focus on the generally overlooked manner in which Jesus approached the various people he encountered.

This week’s discussion will center around Jesus’ dialogical conversations with the Pharisee Nicodemus (John 3) and the Samaritan Woman at the Well (John 4).

The class begins at 11:45 a.m. and will be in the church center directly after the 10:30 a.m. celebration.

The two earlier celebrations are at 7:45 and 9 a.m., and everyone is welcome at all the gatherings. Coffee and other treats are always available .

St. Francis in the Foothills is at 4625 E. River Road, at North Swan Road. For more information call the church office at 299-9063.

Works of two artists featured in library show

“Inspired Artscapes and Innovative Gourds: The Art of Jeanne Fellow and Lynne East-Itkin” will be on display in December in the gallery at the Kirk-Bear Canyon Library, 8959 E. Tanque Verde Road.

You can meet the artists at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 14. Fellow will be demonstrating LumenArt at 3 p.m.

East-Itkin has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from the California College of Art and Crafts and is the owner of Lynne M East Design Studio, Many Hands Artist Cooperative and Blue Raven Art School. In recent years she has been applying her design expertise to gourd art, both two- and three-dimensional works.

Fellow, creator of LumenArt and Inspired Artscapes, has been experimenting with various two- and three-dimensional art forms for more than 30 years. This exhibit showcases various styles she has developed in the past three years.

In 2011 Fellow created a technique called LumenArt — lighting her painted paper sconces with CFL and LED bulbs. The works look very different when the light source is turned on or turned off. In 2012 Fellow developed another technique to shape painted paper into “wall sculptures” in a variety of different forms, which are displayed in the exhibit.

The gallery is open during library hours: 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

For more information call the library at 594-5275.
