Here's something to take the sting out of going back to school: All teachers, professors, teaching assistants and tutors in the Tucson area can adopt a pet for free at the Pima Animal Care Center this month.

Licensing fees, which are $15 a year for altered dogs, still apply.

The county-run shelter is open seven days a week — noon-7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. It’s at 4000 N. Silverbell Road.

For everyone else, pet adoptions are $35, plus the price of a license. That fee includes spay/neuter surgery, if necessary, and shots and microchipping. Puppies under the age of three months are $85.

For more information go to or call 243-5900.

In addition, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona is hosting a "Late Night, Back-to-School" adoption event from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the main shelter at 3450 N. Kelvin.

Select dogs and cats will have a zero adoption fee and all other pets have a half-off adoption fee. Call 327-6088 for more information.
