Student wins Legion oratorical contest

Pusch Ridge Christian Academy student Alex Kate Halvey won a state oratorical competition and will compete in a national event.

Halvey will compete for an $18,000 scholarship in the American Legion National Oratorical contest in Indianapolis April 20. She started her road to the nationals in February by winning a contest conducted by Oro Valley American Legion Post 132.

Green Fields stages play April 25-27

Advanced drama students at Green Fields Country Day School will perform John Savage's comedic play "The Curious Savage," about a millionaire widow following her dreams, later this month.

Performances are at 7 p.m. April 25-27 at the school, 6000 N. Camino de la Tierra. General admission is $8, with discounts available for students.

"This show has laughs, love and tears, and will make your heart feel good," Green Fields drama teacher Mickey Nugent, who is directing the show, said in a news release.

Calls to submit congressional art

Southern Arizona high school students are invited to submit artwork for the annual congressional art competition. The deadline is 5 p.m. Friday.

The winning piece will be exhibited in the halls of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., for the next year.

The winning Southern Arizona student will receive two airline tickets to fly to Washington for the opening of the exhibition this spring.

Students may submit artwork to U.S. Rep. Ron Barber's Tucson office, 3945 E. Fort Lowell Road, Suite 211, 85712.

The contest is open to high school students living in the 2nd congressional district.
