Longtime Amphi board member dies

An Amphitheater School District board member died Jan. 27 after a long battle with cancer. He had resigned Jan. 23.

Jeff Grant served on the school board for almost 11 years, according to a school district news release.

Grant was elected to the board in 2002 and served on site-based governance councils at Copper Creek Elementary and Wilson K-8 schools before joining the school board.

He also was a youth basketball and soccer coach for more than two decades.

Marana, Amphi crown spelling bee winners

Jeremy Parry, an eighth-grader at Marana Middle School, won the Marana Unified School District Spelling Bee Wednesday by correctly spelling the word "gruesome."

Parry was one of 28 competitors in the contest, which was held at Mountain View High School and included spellers from the fourth through eighth grades.

Parry was followed by Ironwood Elementary School sixth-grader Thomas Rood, Tortolita Middle School eighth-grader Elizabeth McGee, Marana Middle School eighth-grader IsaMaria Baker and DeGrazia Elementary School fifth-grader Samuel Rogers.

Copper Creek Elementary School fourth-grader Michael Chen won the Amphitheater School District Spelling Bee Jan. 25. His winning word was "influenza."

La Cima Middle School eighth-grader Luis Diaz took second place, followed by Cross Middle School eighth-grader Savannah Koskineini and Coronado K-8 School seventh-grader Odessa Mix.

The top four spellers from each district will compete at the Pima County Spelling Bee at 10 a.m. Feb. 16 at the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind, Berger Center for the Performing Arts, 1200 W. Speedway.

Green Fields school offers open house

Green Fields Country Day School is offering an open house that's also an evening with the stars - celestial bodies, not celebrities.

At 5 p.m. Feb. 13, the K-12 private school at 6000 N. Camino de la Tierra will open for student-led campus tours, food truck dining and stargazing led by University of Arizona astronomer Paul Smith. For more information, email bcordier@greenfields.org or visit www.greenfields.org online.
