6 NW teens take culinary honors
Six Joint Technical Education District students from northwest-side schools won scholarships at the Careers Through Culinary Arts Program final competition.
Nicole Carpenter, a senior at Canyon del Oro High School, earned a full-tuition scholarship for the Art Institute of Tucson valued at $50,000.
Zulema Contreras of the JTED Culinary Arts program at Flowing Wells High School won a $2,000 scholarship.
Preston Fredrick and Luis Magallon from JTED @ Mountain View and Matthew Breitwieser of Flowing Wells and Bryn Timmas from Canyon del Oro won scholarships to attend a master class at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Scottsdale.
The Careers through Culinary Arts Program works with public schools across the country.
FW fashion students receive awards
Three Flowing Wells High School fashion students won gold medals at the annual Family, Career & Community Leaders of America spring conference.
In a competition that took place March 21-22, students presented projects before panels of judges.
Maria Vazquez and Sierra Ozemok won medals for fashion construction and Amanda Real won for recycle/redesign. All three students will compete at the national FCCLA conference in Nashville July 5-11.
CDO pom team wins state competition
The Canyon del Oro High School pom team won its first state championship.
The 11-member squad competed against dozens of teams at the Arizona State Cheerleading/Pom Tournament March 1 and 2, winning the Division I Varsity Hip-Hop title in the small team category. The team also placed third in the Division II Varsity Pom category.
"I try to prepare them for real life," coach Breland Atkinson said in a news release, adding that she teaches the students about accountability and time management, as well as dance.
