Green Fields to hold 'Griffin Gallop' run

Green Fields Country Day School wants to get the community running in its annual race event Jan. 27.

The "Griffin Gallop," named after the school's mascot, includes 5K and one-mile runs along with live music and a pancake breakfast.

Teams can sign up to collectively compete, and prizes will be handed out to top finishers in various age groups. All who participate will receive a T-shirt. The event is a fundraiser for the Green Fields sports squads.

The 5K, which starts at 9 a.m., begins and ends on campus, at 6000 N. Camino de la Tierra, and the one-mile run, which starts at 9:15 a.m., stays on campus.

Registration is due Jan. 18. Cost for the 5K is $25. It's $20 for the one-mile run. Email to RSVP. Those who register after Jan. 18 must pay a $10 late fee in addition to the regular amount.

Sportsmanship wins $1K for soccer team

Liberty Mutual gave an Oro Valley youth soccer team a heck of a gift this holiday season - a $1,000 grant.

The team, called CDO 97G Gold, caught the company's eye with a show of sportsmanship during a tournament. The squad was scheduled to face a team from Alaska, but the opponents became stuck in traffic and offered to forfeit the game. CDO 97G Gold persuaded the tournament committee to have the game declared a tie instead, and as a result the Oro Valley team was eliminated from the tournament.

Liberty Mutual heard the story and awarded the team a spot on its list of "Top 10 Responsible Sports Moments" of 2012, along with the grant.
