Wilson K-8 teacher heading to Arctic

Betsy Wilkening, a teacher at Wilson K-8 in the Amphitheater Public Schools district, was selected for inclusion in the National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellows program.

Wilkening is one of 14 teachers in the U.S. to earn the distinction. She'll spend part of the summer in the Arctic aboard an expedition ship.

"I am really looking forward to creating lessons to develop student understanding of Arctic geography and native communities," Wilkening said in a news release. The program honors former National Geographic Society Chairman Gilbert M. Grosvenor.

Marana schools name 2 principals

The Marana Unified School District recently named new principals of DeGrazia Elementary School and MCAT High School.

Michael Bauschka, associate principal and athletic director at Tortolita Middle School, will take over at DeGrazia; Mountain View associate principal Denise Coronado will head MCAT.

MUSD named both principals at an April 11 Governing Board meeting.

Bauschka will become principal July 1, when current DeGrazia Principal Pamela Beine becomes MUSD assistant superintendent.

Bauschka has worked in public education for 15 years and has been with Tortolita since 2010. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science and history from the University of Arizona and a master of arts in educational leadership and in early childhood education from Northern Arizona University.

Coronado will replace the retiring Lynne Prouty July 1. She has 13 years of experience in MUSD and has been with Mountain View since 2010. She has a bachelor of arts degree in English from the UA and a master of arts degree in education, administration and supervision from the University of Phoenix.
