CDO student among local Flinn Scholars

Jacob Rockland of Canyon del Oro High School was among five Tucson-area seniors awarded the 2013 Flinn Scholarship.

The scholarship includes tuition, room and board, international study-related travel, personal mentorship by university faculty and other benefits. The award is valued at more than $100,000.

A total of 653 students from across the state applied for the honor. Of those, 20 were selected.

The other Tucson-area Flinn Scholars are: Alden Hill of Basis Tucson North, MeiLin Ossanna and Ethan Wilson of University High School, and Augustus Woodrow-Tomizuka of Sonoran Science Academy.

Applicants were required to have a minimum 3.5 grade-point average, a ranking in the top 5 percent of their graduating class, a minimum score of 1300 on the SAT or 29 on the ACT, and participation and demonstrated leadership abilities in extracurricular activities.

Marana teacher chosen for academy

Candice Dunfee, who teaches third grade at Ironwood Elementary School in the Marana Unified School District, was selected to attend the 2013 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy, which runs July 21-26 in Jersey City, N.J.

Dunfee is one of 200 teachers to earn the distinction, one of seven from Arizona, and the only one from the Tucson area. More than 1,500 teachers applied. Dunfee has taught in the district since 1999.

The academy, which was launched in 2005, is an all-expense-paid professional development program for teachers of third through fifth grades.
