'Seussical Jr. The Musical' on tap

Legacy Traditional School Northwest Tucson, a K-8 charter school, will perform "Seussical Jr. The Musical" Friday and Saturday.

It's the second annual performance event staged by the school. Last year's production of "Annie" sold out.

Students have been working on "Seussical Jr." for more than a year. The show includes more than 70 handmade costumes, sets and props.

Performances will start at 7 p.m. Friday, and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at 3500 W. Cortaro Farms Road. Admission is $6.

3 Amphi schools going to 'Odyssey' finals

Three Amphitheater Public Schools district teams won first place in their divisions in the Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament April 6.

The Canyon del Oro High School Theatrical Team, Painted Sky Elementary Technical Team and Rio Vista Elementary Classics Team will compete in the World Finals May 22-25 in East Lansing, Mich.

The competition promotes critical thinking, creativity and teamwork. Students solve problems, including building devices and interpreting literature.

Marana teacher wins Yale music award

Marana Middle School teacher Sarah Ross is one of 50 educators selected for a prestigious Yale award.

Ross will attend the June 6-9 Symposium on Music in Schools in New Haven, Conn., at the Yale School of Music, where she will receive the Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award. She and the other winners were chosen from nearly 300 nominees. She is the only winner from Arizona.

At the symposium, she'll discuss music education issues and take part in workshops. The theme is "The Role of Music in School Reform."

Ross has been with the school, where she is choir director, since 2007. She also runs the school talent show and serves as vocal director and pianist in the annual spring musical.

She serves as the South-Central Regional Choir chair for the Arizona Music Educators Association.
