The community is invited to attend a giant baby shower Sunday for the big bundle of joy expected to be born at the Reid Park Zoo in the coming weeks.

Mama-to-be Semba, one of the zoo’s African elephants, is nearing the end of her 22 month-long pregnancy and will give birth to the first elephant born at the zoo.

Elephant crafts, activities and shower games will be a part of Sunday’s celebration which lasts from 8 to 10 a.m. at the zoo, 3400 Zoo Court.

The first 100 guests will nosh on cupcakes. And the whole elephant herd will join in on the fun with a healthy “cake” and the opening of food “gifts.”

Guests can sign a giant card to welcome the new calf.

And keepers will give details about Semba’s pregnancy care which includes stretching, foot care and body conditioning.

Tours of the Elephant Care Center will be given at 9:30 a.m.

Guests who don’t want to attend the party empty-handed can check out Semba’s baby wish list, including items selected by keepers ranging from $4 feed buckets to a year’s supply of sand for $12,000.

The wish list and a blog documenting Semba’s pregnancy can be found at
