As Arizonans, we enjoy about 300 sunny days a year.

That's great for golf and tennis dates, but not so great for our skin.

Our state has some of the highest skin cancer rates in the world. And the sun can leave our skin wrinkled and spotted, a study last week determined.

In this month that the sun beats down on us most relentlessly, the time seems right to brush up on the latest information about using sunscreen.

Some of these tips on how to get the most out of your sunscreen may surprise you. And the solutions to common excuses for not using bottled sun protection may inspire you to give it a try.

If nothing else, the sunscreen cowboy created by Arizona Daily Star graphic artist Tammie Graves may make even the most sunscreen-adverse feel a bit better about grabbing a bottle and slathering up.
